چکیده

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV extended Baryonic Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (SDSS-IV/eBOSS) will observe 195 000 emission-line galaxies (ELGs) to measure the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) standard ruler at redshift 0.9. To test different ELG selection algorithms, 9000 spectra were observed with the SDSS spectrograph as a pilot survey based on data from several imaging surveys. First, using visual inspection and redshift quality flags, we show that the automated spectroscopic redshifts assigned by the pipeline meet the quality requirements for a reliable BAO measurement. We also show the correlations between sky emission, signal-to-noise ratio in the emission lines, and redshift error. Then we provide a detailed description of each target selection algorithm we tested and compare them with the requirements of the eBOSS experiment. As a result, we provide reliable redshift distributions for the different target selection schemes we tested. Finally, we determine an target selection algorithms that is best suited to be applied on DECam photometry because they fulfill the eBOSS survey efficiency requirements.

The Sdss-iv Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: Quasar Target Selection

As part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) IV the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) will improve measurements of the cosmological distance scale by applying the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) method to quasar samples. eBOSS will adopt two approaches to target quasars over 7500 deg. First, a “CORE” quasar sample will combine the optical selection in ugriz using a li...

Line Emission in the Brightest Cluster Galaxies of the NOAO Fundamental Plane and Sloan Digital Sky Surveys

We examine the optical emission line properties of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) selected from two large, homogeneous datasets. The first is the X-ray selected National Optical Astronomy Observatory Fundamental Plane Survey (NFPS), and the second is the C4 catalogue of optically selected clusters built from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 3 (SDSS DR3). Our goal is to better unders...

We present a simulation of the spatial, luminosity and spectral distributions of four types of stellar objects. We simulate: (1) Galactic stars, based on a Galactic structure model, a stellar population synthesis model, stellar isochrones, and stellar spectral libraries; (2) white dwarfs, based on model atmospheres, the observed luminosity function , mass distribution, and Galactic distribution...

The OLS–lens survey: The discovery of five new galaxy–galaxy strong lenses from the SDSS⋆

Bright galaxy–galaxy strong lenses are much more powerful than lensed quasars for measuring the mass profiles of galaxies, but until this year only a handful have been known. Here we present five new examples, identified via the optimal line–of–sight gravitational lens search strategy applied to luminous red galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our survey largely complements a simil...

The SDSS/XMM-Newton Quasar Survey: Correlation between X-ray spectral slope and Eddington ratio

We present a correlation between the 2-10 keV spectral slope ΓX and the Eddington ratio L/LEDD in a sample of ∼ 400 Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasars with available hard X-ray spectra from XMM-Newton serendipitous observations. We find that the ΓXL/LEDD correlation is strongest in objects with black hole (BH) masses determined from the Hβ line, and weaker (but still present) for those based on M...
